Mate at work knows a guy with a wrecking yard that specialises in Jeeps, so he's trying to get me a set of the Akebono's for cheap.
From what I can gather, the existing ones use those spring wires to constantly re-align the facing shoe.. but never work properly and the whole design is prone to freezing up in obscure positions accelerating rotor and pad wear. Its so bad there was a class-action law suit against Chrysler about these exact brakes, the Akebono's were the solution, but the recall has since expired so

With the VB/C/H/K/L Commodore your biggest problem is there's no venting between the boot & the cabin worth mentioning, which means any boot install you do wont get much bass into the cabin where you want it. All it will do is make the boot lid/number plate/rear light/fuel tank rattle and sound like shit.

First off, do you have two rear speakers OEM fitted ? They were optional, so you might not have them.
If you do, I'd suggest mounting your 8"s in those holes on both sides, and rebuild the parcel shelf from 12-16mm thick MDF. Dont fit rear full range speakers.. After all, you dont sit in the back seat and drive :wink:
Alternatively, you could get a pair of 6"x9"s or Kenwood 7"x10", and mount them into the OEM holes, the motors will fit thru if you rebuild the parcel shelf from 12-16mm thick MDF. You can also leave the 8"s out, as 6x9/7x10 generate the same bass frequencies as an 8" or 10" woofer would.

Bugger of a job but cleaned the TB, sadly it wasnt very dirty at all....only got a very small amount of crap.....butterfly was clean. Unsurprisingly the light still comes on, but i will try clearing it now and seeing what live data i can access, i know it shows *some*.

Nope, dosent give me throttle position etc, no fuel stats except pressure actually, which is approx 3,500 PSI @ idle. The code re-appears as soon as i scan again, even at idle with the warning light off, it also repeats the code so it shows up twice in the list. First i scanned it was there 3 times. Oh well, i leave it for the dealer i think

Yeah I've talked about friends here too.. modern cars are getting more and more integrated. Each time the aftermarket gives us answers (one and a half din adapters, etc) but its getting harder to get stereos into cars. The wifes old Pontiac had the airbag circuit integrated into the CD player, so you needed a $100 brainbox just to put in a $100 headunit ! This is probably part of it.
The economy tanking is still being felt here.. the moneys coming back but everyones being pretty cautious about spending on toys like $600 subs and $1000 amps. We lost a lot of manufacturers.

The hope would be the condensing of the classes get more competitors into less classes and increase the competitiveness, and make it more accessible to all.

TBH my biggest complaint about dB Drag was, and still is, the rules change each year. You built/bought to comply and maximise your advantage then the rules change and now your amps are wrong, or the subs are wrong, or battery.

I'm interested to see if the battery limits lifted in Street A.

Max was combined some time ago.. but TBH I'm not sure if there's still a place for it ? It was started as a gateway class for SS, but I dont think anyone moves forward from Max to SS. There's never any entrants into Max at the events I've attended in the last few years, and there werent any when I actively competed in it.

All Extreme classes combined, makes sense. When guys can do 180 with a single sub, you know its more about the build than the sub quantity. This is probably a smart move in the long run. How many Extreme cars do you see in the lanes ? Maybe one, once.

OK.. so the steerings fixed. I think my next job is to replace the rotten Teves brake calipers with Akebono calipers instead. These Teves are sticky and glitchy and one of the worst designs I've ever see in a brake. The rotors have under 3000km on them and they already look heavily worn due to the Teves applying un-even braking force and dragging. The Akebono upgrade was mandatory in post 2002 models (all 03+ have them), and was part of a factory recall which of course has now expired. 2nd hand market it is.

Teves; uses spring wires to get everything to line up correctly, but it never does:

I've found it easiest to open the intake and have a look at the throttle then gently wipe out the heavier of the packed on shit before hitting it with spray.. then you have easily burnt off liquid rather than big chunks of shit to contend with

Shame you dont have a real-time scantool.. I borrowed one and it was nice, real time feedback on the throttle position, injector pulse, etc. That'd tell you real quick if its a sensor issue or something else. Interestingly enough, the Jeep's factory calibration shows idle throttle position as 25% on the TPS

Its probably something i'd be interested in later on, i mean i cant see anywhere to mount the LPG tank under the car, so inside it would have to be.....i dont like that idea much.

Well she did the 850km all fine, hasnt used much oil or water and never gave a problem. Ive picked up a cheap scantool off ebay, $17 delivered. To my amazement it actually works, haha. Gave me the same error code 3 times, P0638 which according to my scantool software and engine-codes.com:

"Throttle actuator control range / performance"

"The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) compares the actual Throttle Possition (TP) with the target TP when the engine is running. If the difference is more than the specification, the PCM determines that there is a throttle actuator control circuit range/performance problem."

Which would explain why the light dosnt come on until its warm and i rev her over 3k, soon as the tacho gauge drops below 3, the light pops up....almost like clockwork. If you drive it under 2.5k (under 25% throttle) the light barely ever comes on.

Apparently a simple remedy could be a throttle body clean, other faults are:

- Drive-by-wire control system malfunction
- Throttle actuator malfunction
- Throttle valve malfunction
- PCM malfunction

So obviously im going to try cleaning the TB first, i'll get some product from work tomorrow and give it a whirl. Otherwise its up to the dealer

Steering box is done. Something inside the steering gearbox went bad and it was progressively collapsing more and more. Took 45 minutes with a pair of sledge hammers and 15 tonne puller, tightened with an impact gun, to get the pitman off. Not an in-vehicle job.

Still needs realignement.

Crystal, but probably not something i "need" just yet, as well as that power chip/module thing.

Suzuki are replacing the sump gasket (small oil leak) and making the necessary repairs to get rid of the diesel injection light that keeps popping up. All under warranty. Could mean a particulate filter "upgrade" (their words) and/or ECM replacement and/or keys being re-coded, apparently that light doubles as the immobilizer so could be as simple as a key problem.

Im off to Coffs Harbour (400km each way) tomorrow for a small getaway, we will see how she fairs

This is my new pride and joy, Suzuki Grand Vitara DDiS JT MY09 1.9L Turbo Diesel.

A few specs:

* Renault sourced engine
* Bosch high pressure common rail injection system
* Garret intercooled turbo
* All wheel drive
* REAL 4 x 4 system, low range, diff locks etc.
* ESP and 6 airbags etc.
* One female owner since new (never been offroad)
* Full factory optioned at purchase, including tow bar, sidesteps, nudgebar and tint.
* Bridgestone Dueler A/T, recently fitted.
* Aftermarket "M series" add-on alarm (fitted by Suzuki)
* Factory audio, crappy head-unit and about 10w speakers.....atleast it has MP3 capabilities, no iPod. Upgrades will follow.

And its developed a new problem.. steering was locking then popping, found out the fuckheads who "aligned" it (I was never satisfied with its alignment to begin with) didnt clamp the drag link to the ball joints properly and the pop was the balls slipping out of the joint, so the alignments fucked again.. off to a new mechanic for an alignment.

Good news ! The battery is back to hold 12.9V, it only took 4 days to get it back to a normal state of charge again.

Before next year the whole car needs a lot of work.. I think I will start the work by removing the entire engine and trans, cleaning the lot and paint, replacing the clutch and repairing a number of minor niggles in the trans/shifter. The front end needs work, so I'm thinking of upgrading to DA Integra 12" brakes up front, and replacing the control arms.

Thats a shame, but good your repairing it ! The D3 has great potential, I owned one for a period of time but it also had problems.. it was over $800 to have Earthquake rebuild it for me, so its far better if you can repair it yourself. Keep us posted
